Jarenlang was professor Kempeneers een wereldautoriteit in de farmaceutische wetenschappen. Op een gegeven moment stond hij zelfs dicht bij een doorbraak naar een medicijn om de doden weer tot leven te wekken. Zo dicht… maar hij kon het nooit afmaken. Enkele mislukte experimenten dreven hem tot wanhoop. Van geniale geleerdenaar gekke kwakzalver in een vingerknip. Na de dood van zijn vrouw trok hij zich terug in een klooster en werd diepgelovig. Verhalen kwamen naar buiten. Volgens de overlevering probeerde hij tot zijn laatste dagen zijn medicijn te vervolledigen door middel van christelijke en zelfs satanische rituelen. Zijn jonge dochtertje verbrak hierdoor alle contact en er werd nooit nog iets van haar vernomen.
